"I was appointed by the Navy memorial foundation to take control of the design and coordination of the sculpture walls. I produced 6 reliefs and selected 9 sculptors for the other 20. I felt that a variety of styles would provide additional interest to the project. My responsibilities included working with the foundries and the local agencies with approval authority."

The pink Vermont granite focal statue of Mary and the boy Jesus, "Mary of Nazareth" - especially designed for the Annapolis Mary Garden by renowned sculptor, Leo Irrera, and designer and coordinator of the Navy Memorial in D.C. - was installed in 1991, with blessing on the feast of the Birth of Mary. A new statue of St. Thomas More is now in place as the centerpiece of the Schulze Grand Atrium at the University of St. Thomas School of Law. "The statue is a powerful statement for our vision for this law school and for the kind of servant leaders we are educating,” said Dean Thomas Mengler.
Carved from the finest Carara marble, the statue itself stands seven feet tall and weighs just less than 5,000 pounds. With a pedestal underneath it, the artwork measures 10 feet. It stands just to the left of the Frey Moot Courtroom. The statue will be formally dedicated on February 7, 2005. (continue article)

Leo C. Irrera of Washington, D.C., the designer of the Celtic cross in the sanctuary, also designed and created the full-scale model of this statue while Italian sculptors carved the Carrara marble in the Antognazzi Studio in Pietrasanta, Italy. The current and sixteenth pastor, Msgr. Peter J. Vaghi, blessed and dedicate this statue on February 7, 2002, the 525th anniversary of the birth date of Thomas More. (continue article)

The sanctuary crucifix designed in the Celtic fashion was dedicated in 1994 during the 200th anniversary of the founding of the parish. Both the crucified and the risen Christ are depicted in this thirteen-foot crucifix, the crucified Christ in the way of a negative imprint. The sculptor, Mr. Leo Irerra, also designed and created the recently acquired statue of St. Thomas More located in the north aisle. (continue article)
